Formatting the Running Head and Page Numbers in Word

Use the Header tool to add these items in Word. Typing them in manually will make it difficult to keep your formatting correct.

Follow these instructions so that the header will appear different on the title page from on the second and subsequent pages.

On the first page, double-click near the top of the page. This will bring up the Header toolbar.

Click the box labeled Different First Page.

Choose Page Numbers, then Top of Page, then Page Number 3 to insert the page number.

Type Running Head: and then a shortened version of your title in all capital letters, about two or three words. Press Tab as needed to move the running head to the left.

Place your cursor on the second page, in the header box.
Choose Page Numbers, then Top of Page, then Page Number 3 to insert the page number.

Type the shortened title in all capital letters (do not write Running head:) and Press Tab as needed to move it to the left.

Click the red X in the Header toolbar to close the header.
